The Mx Group Hosts Successful Blood Drive, Donates Total of 30 Units Employees Participated to Help With the Ongoing Need for Blood Donations

Burr Ridge, Ill. (July 22, 2013) – In an effort to help LifeSource meet the growing demand for blood donations, The Mx Group employees participated in a mobile blood drive, donating 30 units of blood Thursday, July 18.

According to LifeSource, someone needs blood every two seconds – as it is required in many medical situations including surgeries, emergencies, various procedures and cancer treatments. LifeSource also confirms that, specifically, there is a great need for blood donations in the Chicagoland area. In fact, blood manufacturers such as LifeSource must obtain 1,000 donors each day to ensure an adequate blood supply for area patients in need of transfusions in the hospitals serviced.

In support of the ongoing efforts to ensure every patient receives adequate blood, The Mx Group hosted a mobile drive where employees were able to participate with minimal disruptions throughout their work day. The blood drive was held in the company cafeteria where employees, their friends and their families were able to donate blood with the help and expertise of nearly 15 LifeSource employees. The drive was a success, as The Mx Group donated a total of 30 units of blood.

“The Mx Group recognizes the ongoing need for blood donations and we’re always looking for ways to give back to the community,” said The Mx Group’s Director of Organizational Development, Kate Fishburne. “We’re extremely thankful to all our employees who participated in the blood drive and helped make it such a success.”

The need for blood is universal, as people of all ages – from premature infants to the elderly – benefit from donations. Kellie de Leon, account supervisor at The Mx Group, realized firsthand how imperative blood donations are to survival when the hospital treating her grandmother experienced a blood shortage.

“When my grandmother was battling for her life in a small town in central Illinois, the hospital actually ran out of blood,” de Leon said. “She was in desperate need, so my grandfather had to drive as fast as he could to a distant town to get blood from another hospital, hopefully in time to save my grandmother’s life. Thankfully, everything worked out in the end, but the shortage certainly caused some very tense moments for my family.”

Unfortunately, each person in need of blood is not always able to receive it; less than ten percent of the national population chooses to donate. However, programs such as the LifeSource mobile drive exist to make it more convenient for donors to give blood, encouraging more people to give and helping to prevent blood shortages for those in need.
